BritsinCrete has learned that the Lassithi Municipality of Agios Nikolaos has serious plans afoot to re-boot the community of Milatos on the north coast of Lassithi. The infrastructure moves would be a welcome boost to locals and the British and other expat residents alike, perhaps benefitting the property prices too? A recent meeting at the end of May 2020, on reviving the community of Milatos (within the administrative region of Vrachasi), the Mayor of Agios Nikolaos Mr. Antonis Zervos met with community Vrachasi councillor, G. Metal Detectors - Greece Out of Step with EU?

beach-metal-detectingThere is an interesting conversation on the use of metal detectors in Greece in the Brits in Crete Forum:] . It seems somewhat absurd that Brits Living in Crete, who are clearly hobbyists of the pastime cannot do what they do in UK  i.e.  they are deprived of the right to go beachcombing in Greece. It is against the law.

In general terms an outright ban by EU governments on use of metal detectors contradicts Articles 34 and 36 of the EU. Greece bans the use of metal detectors by ordinary people on national security grounds and cultural heritage. Period.

Getting to Crete

Cheap flights to Crete is the choice for most, although it is getting more expensive with the rising cost of jet fuel and reduced competition among the airlines. You arrive at either Chania, Heraklion or Sitia International Airports. But, when you need to relocate to Greece to set up your new island home, then it is both practical and popular to drive from UK to Crete. You can load up your car with personal belongings, the family and pets and after three days motoring along the auto routes of France, Italy, Switzerland and Greece you are in the sunshine of Crete for an extended stay or to start a new life. Post #Brexit i.e. from December 31, 2020 there are changes. The Brits in Crete websites will attempt to keep Brits who have connections with Europe informed as the information becomes available.
