KNOW YOUR CUSTOMER (KYC) RULE

Introduce yourself to your Greek bank manager!

Did you know as a Brit, after Brexit, KYC rules are stricter now that the UK has left the EU and the British are classified as third country nationals? Substantiated Proof of identity is essential. This is handled in Greece under reference Greek Law 3691/2008 (Government Gazette Α’ 166/5.8.2008) and the relevant provisions of the Bank of Greece (National Central Bank) decision 281/5/17.3.2009 (Government Gazette Β’ 650/9.4.2009) for the prevention of money laundering and terrorism financing, and under Greek Law 2472/1997 on the individual’s protection. Under those Greek statutes, anyone with a Greek bank account must provide annual, verifiable personal information to their bank, even if they have been a client of the bank for many years. Such proofs are confirmation of status (utility bill, rental agreement, or house deeds) or a verified paper issued by your Greek mobile phone operator and annual tax return. And if employed, an employer verification letter.
