Also note: That due to Greece's ongoing economic crisis, the Greek banking industry and members of the Hellenic Banking Association is in a state of flux and consolidation. The original merger slated in 2011 between Alpha Bank and EFG Eurobank was called off in March 2012. In October 2012, National Bank of Greece has made a formal offer for EFG Eurobank in a share swap. Meanwhile the Bank of Piraeus took over the good assets of ATE Bank. As of early 2013 Bank of Piraeus took over Geniki Bank. Due to these moves of rationalisation, you should anticipate that the banks will review the need for all the branches they operate once mergers and acquisitions have taken place. This is handled in Greece under reference Greek Law 3691/2008 (Government Gazette Α’ 166/5.8.2008) and the relevant provisions of the Bank of Greece (National Central Bank) decision 281/5/17.3.2009 (Government Gazette Β’ 650/9.4.2009) for the prevention of money laundering and terrorism financing, and under Greek Law 2472/1997 on the individual’s protection. Under those Greek statutes, anyone with a Greek bank account must provide up-to-date, verifiable personal information to their bank, even if they have been a client of the bank for many years.
